AWAKE NIGERIA BY Tommy Brian

I am a watchman, not by calling but by commission.A writer not by free will, but out of obligation.I speak to fresh bloods of Nigerian origin, men and women born free but are curbed by slavery.I speak to my Nigerian brothers and sisters who are contended with the sugary syrup they get from breakfast and the tokens they lay hold of during elections when their lot should be honey from the hives in Canaan.

I come as an orator with stories so different from the folklores that are washed on you under big oak trees when the moon is fully blown. The stories of tortoise and the dog are great art by all means, teaching great morals.Only can morals stand the test of time when immorality lurks in every open space.

Where are your ears? Give me your ears! For my speech would cleanse blindfolded eyes of mote,it would stir dozing giants for war against the Goliath of our breakthrough as Nigerians.Listen Nigeria...Listen.

This war is not sword against sword, for wisdom is greater than might. When a man is hungry for change, there is no mountain too high to be surmounted. There is no river too deep that cannot be transversed.

What do you think will be the result if all Nigerian youths are hungry, thirstier than panting hart lost in the sand of hot Sahara? What do you think if West,South,North and East could drop their differences like a snake dropping an old skin and with one voice clamour for one Nigeria.Nigerians colluded to sell his own brother for shard of worthless glass or printed paper.

We sit in silence of our wretched lives and hear stories of far away lands where things are blissful-golden streets, high scrappers capping the heaves, lighted alleys. We sit and hear that we are cursed to be backward lackeys for hard labour. They say black is lack, you blame the white men or blame our loving God for the woes you see day and night. You say,If only we were masters of ourselves. If only we were not colonized by strange forces, our country would have been better.

Halt, may i open the pages of history, one page at a time?    A significant page outlines the oditives of an epoch which Nigerians colluded to sell off his brother for a printed paper. It has been with us and it is still with us,infused in our very name Nigeria.Nigerians are selfish,Nigerians are corrupt,Nigerians are wicked,Nigerians are deceitful.

Do you wait for the government? We are the government. Do you wait for a miracle? We are the vessels to bear the miracle.A part of our mortal side,a crowning by the immortal God.We keep clamouring for a changed and better Nigeria, change begins with everyone of us.We bear the blame for the present situation of this country.Let's stir change first- in our very selves.Don't give or collect bribe, don't lobby for admission, don't fill the drainage with litters, don't do anything that is not right to conscience.Nigeria, the land of hope, fertility, culture, prosperity, beauty, the list is endless.

Nature had given us tools,it's in our hands to make the best use of it else ruin our blisssful destiny. I must say,if there would be any positive revolution in Nigeria,we need the help of God.God and revolutions are siamese twins moving head long, with no surgical knife to separe.

I love Nigeria,i know you do.I long for a better Nigeria,i know you also long for a better Nigeria. Therefore, let us bury corruption, prejudice, selfishness and cloth Nigeria with new skins.Arise oh compatriot! God bless Nigeria,God bless Nigerians.
