Someone posted on Facebook "Chibok girls are gone, Chibok boys are next" and the types of comments that dominated the comment page were "lol", " lmao", "rotfl" etc. We all laugh at our problems instead of getting angry or extremely sad.
Psychologically and scientifically, laughing kills depression, but its excess kills something else; "the brain". I believe we can only go forward in this country when we stop laughing at things that should rather get us annoyed or make us sad
Some crazy Nigerians have learnt animation and graphics design not to make money, buy to make fun of their fatherland, yet we laugh. Hardly will you attend any social event in Nigeria without a comedy show on the programme list. Comedy isn't bad, but Nigeria comedians compose their jokes based on problems affecting Nigeria; bad roads, money looting, unstable power supply, chibok girls, illiteracy, bribery, corruption, examination malpractices, fraudling etc
Seeing a long educative post on WhatsApp and Facebook sometimes annoy us because there will not be any funny part in it. Just imagine how much we have run away from educating ourselves, we only care about how to develop our lifestyle, and not our intellect.
In Nigeria, we don't see ourselves as one; if a problem isn't general, we make fun of those who are affected, if the problem is general, everyone is satisfied and we all make fun of ourselves most especially when it comes to the issues of Inflation and unstable electricity.
Government is defined as an institution that sees to the affairs and welfarism of a state, but Nigeria government makes her people suffer, make fake promises, gives false hopes and all we do as the victims is to sit behind our smartphone/computer screens and make unreasonable comments on media. We even embrace foreign series movies yet we keep neglecting and badmouthing ours, without thinking of how to help. We laugh at ourselves instead of raising a peaceful protest to remind the government that we still exist; perhaps they might have forgotten.
Some Nigerians will even say "Since the government we voted has disappointed us, let's wait for four years and someone better will take his position." WTF!!!
In a typical democrazy, the government should fear the mass and respect their decisions. That doesn't happen in this nation where we claim we practice democracy. An artist even called it "crazy demo". This people in governance should not be blamed; if you view the matter from my perspective, you should know that the mass is to be blamed because we all govern the country as implied by democracy. And a politician will always be a politician.
Singling out the faults alone will not change a thing about this country until we are ready to take a bold step. Be frank about Nigeria issues, learn and know more about your country and start thinking of what you can offer, laugh less and pray for this Nation.
I believe *when we stop laughing, Nigerians will discover themselves.
